'Hard being Toby': Coach's defence for AFL villain

//

GWS Giants skipper Toby Greene high contact on Carlton's Jordan Boyd may land him in hot water, but coach Adam Kingsley has leapt to his defence.

The Giants' undefeated run came to an end as Carlton surged past them to take a 19-point win at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The loss could come at an even bigger cost if Greene's act is deemed punishment worthy.

Greene was jumping for a mark in the fourth term, extending his leg and turning his body at the last second as Boyd also flew in to contest the footy.

The clash saw Boyd's head impacted after he ran back with the flight of the ball and he was awarded a free kick.

Greene may be in trouble for this bump.

Boyd did not get taken off the ground and finished the game.

Greene's history with the match review officer has been far from pretty, which could be cause for concern for the Giants.

But Kingsley is adamant his leader will escape any punishment this time.

"It's hard being Toby," Kingsley said post match.

"There won't be anything in that."

Kingsley explained the incident from his perspective, defending Greene's action and noting that he is "allowed" to utilise his body to safely contest for the footy.

"He's allowed to contest the ball, isn't he? He's allowed to launch at the ball?," he said.

"And if you're running and launching at the ball, and you've got your eyes for the ball, and you're trying to take a chest mark, and you get knocked … free kick against?"

Kingsley was also questioned on whether it's difficult to teach his players to lead for a mark while also being aware of not hurting opposition players in the air.

"No, just Toby," Kingsley said.

Meantime, Giants forward Jesse Hogan could also be in trouble after an off-the-ball hit to Lewis Young's face, after a scuffle broke out in the goal square.

GWS will face a nervous wait to see if the pair will be available to take on Brisbane during their round seven clash at Manuka Oval.
