Stars in awe of insane 1000-mile, two-race day

//

NASCAR star Kyle Larson has earned the plaudits of IndyCar's best as he looks to take on one of world motorsport's toughest assignments.

In 2024, the NASCAR Cup Series champion will contest the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

It's a rare feat that only a handful of drivers have attempted.

It will see Larson start with the 200-lap, 500-mile IndyCar race on May 27 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in what is the highest-attended, single-day sporting event in the world.

He'll then fly from Indiana to North Carolina to race in the 400-lap, 600-mile NASCAR Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

All told, Larson could spend around eight hours in a race car by the end of the night.

Kyle Larson will contest two endurance races in one day, solo.

Alongside motorsport's Triple Crown, doing the double is an effort many can only dream of completing.

"It's just a hell of a story, man," said Alexander Rossi, who will be teammates with Larson at McLaren in 2024.

"It's really, really cool to be able to be witness, part of someone doing the double.

"That's such an amazing thing for any racing driver, to have the opportunity to do that.

"Obviously I think he's one of the elite racing drivers on the planet.

"He's going to come in and have his own kind of opinion and experience to bring to the table.

"I think both years we've got a lot of really exciting things to look forward to in terms of our four-car lineup for the 500."

Pato O'Ward finished second in the 2022 Indianapolis 500 for McLaren.

Just four drivers have attempted the Memorial Day double.

John Andretti was the first to do it in 1994 and a year later Davy Jones tried to complete it but failed to qualify for the Charlotte leg.

The first of five doubles by Robby Gordon came in 1997 with subsequent efforts coming in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004.

Tony Stewart remains the only driver to successfully complete every lap of the double in 2001.

He is also the only driver to claim a podium finish in either race, earning third at Charlotte.

Kurt Busch is the most recent driver to contest the double in 2014.

Larson's forthcoming attempt also earned praise from another of his future McLaren teammates Pato O'Ward, describing the effort as "sick".

"I think it's so cool that he's going to join us next year," said O'Ward.

"I think he's going to really enjoy. Definitely going to be probably the quickest he's ever going to go in his life. So I'm sure he will enjoy that.

"I mean, he drives so many different cars. He jumps into whatever, I feel like, opportunity that he wants to either experience or enjoy.

"The guy can wheel a race car. I'm excited to have him as a teammate.

Kyle Larson drives for Hendrick Motorsport in the NASCAR Cup Series.

"I met him a little bit – not last year but two years ago in Abu Dhabi when he was there after he won the NASCAR championship.

"I was so happy to see him do so well on his comeback to NASCAR after the mishap that he had a few years ago.

"I'm a big fan of him. I think he's great. I feel like I can speak on behalf of the whole team; everybody's really excited to have him around."

McLaren will be led by Rossi, O'Ward, and Felix Rosenqvist in 2023 with a fourth car added for 2024 to accommodate Larson.

Going into the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season, Larson has 19 race wins and one championship to his credit.
