Iconic team reveals 'world-first' Gen3 Mustang

//

The Shell V-Power Racing Team has unveiled its revamped Gen3 Ford Mustang GT ahead of next month's Supercars Championship.

The move to the seventh-generation Ford Mustang and brand-new Chevrolet Camaro (to replace the Holden Commodore) in 2023, brings with it new technical regulations to encourage closer racing.

Ten Ford Mustangs and 15 Camaros will make up the grid this year.

Speaking on Nine's Today, driver Will Davison described the changes as the biggest overhaul of the series in decades.

"It's a massive year ahead," he said.

"It's the biggest change in the category in 30 years.

"It's a completely different technical package we have on the cars, they look absolutely sensational.

"We've got different production-based engines in the cars so they are going to be a handful for the drivers - they're going to be moving around a lot more.

"Everyone has the same opportunity [to take out the title], the cars are all very similar in build. So, we've got a lot to learn this next month before the first race, but the racing this year is going to be unpredictable and a huge challenge."

Racing legend and team co-owner Dick Johnson was most intrigued to see the changes in the downforce and aerodynamics of the cars play out on the track.

"It's going to be very different and it's going to be unpredictable for the start of the season, at least, as these cars are brand new, most of the guys haven't even driven one yet," he said.

"It'll be interesting with less aerodynamic aid - a lot comes down to the driver itself and we'll just see.

"I think the cream will float to the top and hopefully we've got all the cream."

Unveiling the car, Davison observed the revitalised look of the team's iconic livery and its greater resemblance to the road car.

"It's refined what is already a beautiful livery, a famous livery," he said.

"You can also see it really resembles the road car.

"Not one part of this car is the same as last year's so it looks good but it's time to get into it tomorrow starting with our testing.

"This model (Mustang) has not even been released in the US yet, so this will be the first time, anywhere in the world, that this model mustang gets its first showing," added Johnson.

The first round of the 2023 Supercars Championship kicks off in Newcastle from March 10-12.
