Grim reality facing 'struggling' Tigers

//

The Tigers endured, without doubt, the worst season since the formation of the joint venture in 2000, picking up their first wooden spoon and winning just four of 23 games, with one to play.

Coach Michael Maguire was sacked mid-season but if anything, the Tigers slid further downhill after his departure, winning just one game under caretaker Brett Kimmorley.

As often happens when a team is struggling, the Tigers had no luck - they were dudded by officials in a highly controversial loss to the Cowboys and several other close results failed to go their way.

Injuries cut a swathe through the squad, resulting in a host of talented youngsters being given their chance in top company.

The Tigers have some good young players coming through the ranks - but it may take three or four more seasons of pain before we see the best of them.

The return of premiership-winning coach Tim Sheens and two quality signings in Api Koroisau and Isaiah Papali'i give the Tigers some hope for better days in 2023.

Watch for a cleanout and plenty of new faces to come in over the summer.

Wests Tigers are on the lookout for a new coach after Michael Maguire was sacked.

Best player: Coming back from the UK, Jackson Hastings brought energy and enthusiasm to the Tigers before a broken leg resulted in a premature end to his season.

Biggest disappointment: Luciano Leilua started the season well but once he signed with the Cowboys for 2023, his form dropped and he lost his place in the team. He asked for a release and it was granted, with officials believing he wasn't giving his all.

Key signing: Api Koroisau was a key figure in Penrith's charge to the premiership last season and is one of the sharpest dummy halves in the game. He will get the team going forward.

Gains: Sione Fainu (Manly), Apisai Koroisau (Penrith), Isaiah Papali'i (Parramatta)

Losses: Luke Garner (Penrith), Luciano Leilua (North Queensland), Thomas Mikaele (Warrington), Kelma Tuilagi (Manly)
