Huge injury blow to rebel tour's $900m champ

//

Former world No.1 Jon Rahm is in doubt for next weekend's US Open after withdrawing from the LIV Golf event at Houston.

Rahm pulled out after just six holes of the second round on Sunday morning (AEST) because of an infection in his left foot.

There were no immediate details on the nature of the injury. He was seen wincing after one shot during the opening round at the Golf Club of Houston.

Rahm, the two-time major champion, carded a 69 in the first round. He had made six pars before pulling the plug. He won the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines.

The 29-year-old has not won since the 2023 Masters. He left the PGA Tour for the Saudi-funded league last December in what was arguably the tours biggest coup.

While it has been 14 months since he claimed a victory on any tour, he was the only player to finish in the top 10 in every LIV event this year.

The majors have been a slow start for the Spaniard. He finished in a tie for 45th in the Masters as defending champion, and missed the cut at the PGA Championship last month. It was the first time in five years he had missed the cut at a major.

The US Open begins at Pinehurst No.2 on Thursday night (AEST) – a course Rahm hasn't played.
