Eagles deepen search for 'most important' role in club

//

West Coast's bid to appoint a new list manager has begun, with the club reaching out to several candidates across the AFL.

Despite being advertised on SEEK recently, the gig is widely regarded as one of the most attractive jobs in football, with the successful applicant set to replace Rohan O'Brien, who stepped down in December.

The prospect of rebuilding a playing list with significant off-field resources is an attractive one for recruiters and officials across the league.

And being afforded the time to do it properly with an unashamedly long-term vision is certain to see applicants clamouring.

"It's probably the most important job at West Coast right now," one list chief told 9News Melbourne.

"It's a plum gig."

Though the process is in its infancy, the prevailing view is that West Coast chief executive Don Pyke will prefer a candidate with strong analytics and data credentials.

But he will need to convince coach Adam Simpson and footy boss Gavin Bell, who one source claimed prefer a more experienced, high profile operator over a numbers-driven official.

GWS recruiting boss Adrian Caruso, who worked for Champion Data before joining the Giants, is in the mix.

Don Pyke.

Caruso is highly regarded league-wide, as is Richmond's national recruiting manager Matthew Clarke.

Sticking with the data focus, senior Sydney analyst Chris Keane, who worked closely with Pyke in opposition analysis at the Swans, is also understood to be on West Coast's radar.

Adelaide list consultant Binuk Kodituwakku, who lives in the USA and works as Duke University's director of recruiting and strategy, will also be part of the process.

Kodituwakku, who is originally from Perth, uses analytics to determine how best to recruit players from high school and rival colleges in the US combined with his role at the Crows.

Other names bandied about in industry circles on Monday included Mick Ablett, Justin Reid, Colin Young, and Chris Toce.

Meanwhile, there is likely to be more changes off-field at Geelong following Andrew Mackie's ascension to GM of football.

While Mackie is currently fulfilling both the footy boss and list manager role, it's understood the Cats have more shuffling to do behind the scenes in the coming months.

Likewise, Sydney is working out how best to cover the loss of Simon Dalrymple to St Kilda following the departure of Toce, who has garnered interest from multiple clubs in recent weeks.

It's understood the Swans are keen to appoint a recruiter by early February, as new footy boss Leon Cameron gets his feet under the table.

Toce is believed to be on their radar, though if Keane left they would need to hire an additional official too.

Hawthorn's recruiting team may also have at least one additional appointment across the next month, though the club is yet to meet with four-time premiership star Jarryd Roughead, who resigned from St Kilda before Christmas.
