Batter out for bizarre diamond duck in 'chaotic' BBL scenes

//

The BBL has provided yet another bizarre moment this season, with Australian Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey part of the rare occurrence between the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes.

Hurricanes batter Nikhil Chaudhary was out for a rare diamond duck – dismissed without facing a ball – even though he did in fact face one ball.

With his previous ball, Strikers spinner Cameron Boyce had 'Canes No.5 Corey Anderson caught in the deep, which brought Chaudhary to the crease.

Chaudhary was shocked at his rare dismissal.

His first ball to Chaudhary drifted down the leg side, where Carey snatched it and whipped the bails off.

While that was going on, the centre umpire rightly called the ball wide, before the square leg umpire sent the stumping upstairs.

"This is chaos for the Hobart Hurricanes," Aussie World Cup hero Glenn Maxwell said in commentary for Fox Sports.

Replays showed Chaudhary was millimetres from getting his foot back in his crease, but Carey was too quick.

While wides and no balls are not considered 'fair deliveries' in the rules of cricket, batters can still be out stumped or run-out.

They also aren't recorded as a ball faced by the batter, meaning Chaudhary earns himself a diamond duck.

Aussie Prodigy Phoebe Litchfield earned herself a diamond duck in the first innings of Australia's recent Test against India.

The wicket left the Hurricanes floundering at 5-36, before Ben McDermott (95 not out) almost single-handedly lifted his side to a respectable 7-165.
