V'landys' 'code war' ploy shut down by clubs

//

NRL clubs have slammed the door on Peter V'landys' controversial 'code war' with rugby union.

The chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission has been keen on allowing clubs to plunder the ranks of Super Rugby franchises for players - with the extra incentive that any signings would be excluded from the salary cap.

But after discussing the idea at a meeting last week, the 17 NRL clubs decided the concept was 'unworkable'.

Some of the richer clubs were keen to explore the idea, but the less financially secure clubs believed it would put them at a greater disadvantage and voted against the proposal.

The Roosters landed one rugby star last week - talented winger Mark Nawaqanitawase - but that was more a case of the club striking back at the 15-a-side game for poaching classy outside back Joseph Suaalii.

Experienced winger eyeing NRL return

Could former Eels and Knights try-scoring ace Ken Sio be heading back to the NRL?

Sio, aged 33, recently signed a new deal with the Salford club, only to be released on compassionate grounds this week.

The tall winger and his wife Vicky and their young twins are heading back Down Under and he may attract the interest of NRL clubs.

Sio debuted for the Eels in 2011 and had four good seasons with the club before moving to Hull KR for two seasons in 2015-16.

He then went back to the UK, spending the past five years at Salford where he became a favourite son.

Roosters get even with rugby

Is a third stint in the NRL on the cards?

Several clubs are after an experienced winger - so watch this space.

Iconic Grothe family form coaching duo

The Campbelltown City Kangaroos in Group 6 have pulled off a double coup, signing two of the best-known players of the modern era to coach their women's team.

Former Eels, Roosters and Test winger Eric Grothe Jnr will be the head coach of the team, but it gets better.

Eric Grothe of the Eels makes a break during the round five NRL match between the Parramatta Eels and the Penrith Panthers held at Parramatta Stadium April 9, 2006 in Sydney, Australia.

The man many believe to be the best winger of all time - Eric's dad Eric Snr - will be his assistant.

Eric Jnr has learned under some of the best coaches in the business, including Brian Smith, Ricky Stuart and Daniel Anderson.

And if the girls can run anything like Eric Snr did back in the 1980s for the Eels, the Roos are in for a mighty season!

NRL enforcer shows nice side

James Fisher-Harris isn't just the best player in the rugby league world after winning the Golden Boot - he's also one of the game's genuinely nice guys.

The Panthers powerhouse is auctioning his boots from the Kiwis' all-conquering Pacific Tests campaign to help the family of a young cancer victim pay their hefty medical bills.

It's a silent auction and to place a bid, message them on Instagram at @ahglassfencing - it's a worthy cause in the festive season and a great prize.
