Kohli labelled 'best batsman of this era' ahead of final

//

Ian Chappell has heaped praise and labelled India's Virat Kohli as the "best of this era", after the 36-year-old's record-breaking 50th ODI century in his side's semi-final win over New Zealand.

Chappell believes it is Kohli alone that can win India its third World Cup trophy against Australia on Sunday at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

"I think Kohli is probably the best batsman of this era. I like his attitude," Chappell said on Wide World of Sports' Outside the Rope.

Kohli notched up his 50th century earlier in the week, helping him surpass one of the greatest batters of all time, India's Sachin Tendulkar, who chalked up 49 ODI centuries.

Chappell believes it is Kohli's "approach" to not only his craft but his fitness that has gotten him to this milestone.

"I heard him interviewed about batting and I think he's got a terrific approach to batting," he said.

The cricketing great lauded Kohli's longevity, explaining how he has prioritised his health to ensure he can continue to perform at the top level for a long time.

"The other thing to look at is his fitness. He's 36 years of age. Have a look at how he was running between wickets. He's obviously put fitness right up there," Chappell said.

Kohli now holds the key to India's success come Sunday's final, but beyond this World Cup, he doesn't look to be slowing down any time soon.

"There was a point well into his career where he averaged over 50 [runs] in all three formats. Now that's remarkable," Chappell said.

Australia will face India in the Cricket World Cup final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday from 7.30pm (AEDT).
