Giddey's $40m deal at risk amid NBA probe

//

Josh Giddey is in danger of losing a lucrative sponsorship with Weet-Bix amid an NBA investigation into his alleged relationship with a minor.

The league says it is looking into an accusation the Oklahoma City Thunder guard had an improper relationship with an underage girl, after an anonymous social media user said a girl who is seen with Giddey in videos and photographs was a high school student at the time.

The social media account has since been deactivated.

Giddey, who turned 21 in October, has been one of the faces of Weet-Bix since 2021, in a deal believed to be worth $40 million over four years.

Reports claim the Australian player can no longer be found on the cereal's social media accounts, but the cereal company said it was keeping an eye on the fallout of the NBA's probe.

Australian star Josh Giddey is a star for Oklahoma City Thunder.

"We are obviously aware of news surrounding Josh Giddey and are waiting for facts to be confirmed," a spokesperson told News Corp.

"We are in contact with Josh's management team and waiting on further detail at this point."

Weet-Bix also has deals with Ellyse Perry, Tim Cahill, Alex de Minaur and Marnus Labuschagne.

Giddey is in the third year of a four-year $41m rookie contract with the Thunder, but his next deal will be significantly more, which could easily make him one of the wealthiest athletes in Australia.

Giddey plays despite allegations of inappropriate relationship

Speaking to media on Monday, Boomers coach Brian Goorjian stated Giddey has his "full support" and confirmed he will travel to the United States in the coming days.

"It's really out of my wheelhouse," Goorjian said on the Gold Coast.

"All I've done is messaged him and let him know the support is there.

"I am going to go over in early December and see him face-to-face.

"I just want to let him know right now he's got our full support."

Giddey had no comment when questioned about the allegations on Saturday.

"Yeah, I mean, I understand the question, obviously," he said. "But there's no further comment right now."

When asked again, he said: "I get the question guys. I completely understand you guys want to know about it. But just for right now, I don't have anything to say."
