Shock as Souths legend placed on life support

//

South Sydney legend Nathan Merritt is on life support in a Sydney hospital, fighting for his life.

The record-breaking winger collapsed yesterday and was rushed to hospital in an unresponsive state.

It is believed he is on life support with his condition listed as serious.

Merritt, 40, was visiting his aunt when he collapsed.

He scored 154 tries over 237 games in the NRL and was a popular player at the South Sydney club.

Merritt is rated as one of the greatest Rabbitohs to have ever played for the Redfern-based team, with his 218-games for Souths, placing him fourth on the club's list of all-time games.

His 146-tries ranks him third on the all-time club try-scorers list.

Merritt played two seasons with Cronulla in 2004-05.

Remarkably, Merritt was twice named NRL's highest tryscorer, when the Rabbitohs finished with the wooden spoon in 2006 and in 2011 when they finished in tenth position.

He played for the Prime Minister's XIII and Indigenous All Stars several times and had one game for New South Wales at State of Origin level.
