'Bad headaches' lead to star's shock diagnosis

//

English star Dom Young has opened up on his frightening health scare, saying he has "never felt anything" like the pain he felt due to headaches stemming from a sinus infection.

Young was heading back to his home country to play international matches against Tonga when he was hospitalised due to the headaches. Scans then revealed the infection had spread into his brain.

"I was getting bad headaches and went to the hospital for the headaches. I've had migraines and stuff before but I'd never felt anything like I was feeling," he told the Sydney Morning Herald.

"I woke up in hospital the next day and my eye was really swollen. I spent the night by myself and then the family came in the morning and they were (asking) 'What's happened to your eye?'

"The doctors got pretty concerned, I went for a scan and then they realised it had spread a bit. That's when it all kicked up."

Next season will be the first of a four-year deal for Young with the Sydney Roosters, but the English star confirmed he will have an interrupted pre-season as a result of his hospital stay.

He conceded it was "heartbreaking" to miss the England internationals.

"It's obviously heartbreaking, that's the reason I came over: to play," Young said.

"I've always spoken about how much it means to me to pull on that jersey, it's disappointing. The most important thing is I am with my family and they can look after me. I'm on the mend now and I've got to look at the positives, but obviously it's really disappointing to miss out.

"I think I'm going to be out of action for a decent amount of time. It is disappointing."
