Root survives as brutal review burns Aussies
Gun England batter Joe Root survived a close DRS call during the second session.
The Australians took a not-out call upstairs because Steve Smith thought a Josh Hazlewood delivery had struck Root's front pad before hitting his bat.
That proved to have been the case, and the ball was going to smash into off, but umpire Joel Wilson's decision was upheld because less than 50 per cent of the ball had impacted in line.
Root survived on four when the English were leading by 139.
The right-hander carried on to make 91, helping his side to a sizeable lead.
