'Comfortable' Roos recruit's physique questioned

//

Off-season recruit Griffin Logue has been called out over his fitness following another heavy loss for North Melbourne at the weekend.

Logue joined North Melbourne during the summer after requesting a trade away from Fremantle, and was lured to North on a lucrative five-year deal.

The 25-year-old has averaged career-high marks of 13.3 disposals and 5.8 marks per game at his new club, but that didn't stop Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes from questioning his output.

"I think his form, for a player that has signed a long-term lucrative contract, smacks of a player that is really comfortable with where he's at when he shouldn't be," Cornes told Nine's Footy Classified.

"He looks overweight to me. I look at what Ross Lyon has done. Jack Steele said, 'Ross has challenged me to lose five kilos' when he first got there. He's putting on five and playing for North while giving effort like this, St Kilda players are losing five.

"I at least expected Alastair Clarkson to drive hard standards and get those little things right so then that adds up to big things and you don't see Griffin Logue let a Norm Smith Medal winner walk into a goal."

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd suggested that it would take time for the impact of Clarkson to really show at North.

"The lucky part is that they've got Clarkson there because players have see that he's been there and he's done it before. They're lucky it's not another young coach," he told Footy Classified.

"But the hard part is when you're just used to losing and you don't know how to win."

Despite being back coaching, the ongoing investigation into historic allegations against him from his time at Hawthorn still hovers over Clarkson.

The Age's Caroline Wilson questioned whether the combination of that investigation and the accumulation of losses at the Kangaroos would cause the master coach to crack.

"Alastair Clarkson is a 'watch' for me. He's still angry, he's still frustrated," she told Footy Classified.

"It'll be interesting to see now how he copes with dreadful performances like this and which way it goes.

"Is he going to perform or is he still the messiah? That's what I'm saying. I'm just not sure."

Clarkson and the Kangaroos face a stiff task in round eight when they face the high-flying Saints at Marvel Stadium on Sunday evening.
