Aussie hopes boosted by Roland-Garros wildcards

//

Australia's singles stocks at Roland-Garros have received a boost with Kim Birrell and Thanasi Kokkinakis receiving main-draw wildcards.

It will be Birrell's main-draw debut at the claycourt grand slam.

Birrell, ranked No.111 in the world, has won 20 of her 32 matches this season, including a stunning upset of Kaia Kanepi at the Australian Open in January.

Kokkinakis has a similar 2023 record, winning 23 from 34.

"This will be my first time playing in the main draw of a Grand Slam outside of Australia, so I'm really looking forward to it and couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity," Birrell said.

"I'm so excited to be playing the main draw of Roland Garros this year. It's an honour to receive the wildcard, and I can't wait to be out there competing and playing my heart out on one of the world's biggest stages.

"I'm proud of the hard work I've put in and the progress I've made, especially over the last few months, and I'm feeling confident that I can produce my best tennis against the best players in the world."

Aussie secures shock win

Birrell is one of just two Aussie women locked into the main draw, alongside Ajla Tomljanovic.

Alongside Kokkinakis in the men's draw is Alex de Minaur, Nick Kyrgios, Jason Kubler, Alexei Popyrin, Christopher O'Connell, Jordan Thompson and Max Purcell.

"It feels great to be back on the clay, I feel like I'm playing well at the moment, and have some great memories playing at the French," Kokkinakis said.

"I really appreciate getting the wildcard and can't wait to compete in Paris again. I've had a few solid wins on the clay recently so I hope I can build on that momentum and get some good results."

Ten more Aussies are entered in qualifiers from May 22, with main-draw action beginning May 28.
