Star reveals 'terrible' reason for F1 carnage

//

McLaren driver Lando Norris has hit out at Formula 1's tyre rules, blaming them for the chaotic scenes at the Australian Grand Prix.

A late-race restart turned to madness when a number of cars were involved in incidents at turn one, with both Alpine cars being eliminated from point-scoring positions.

McLaren was a beneficiary of the drama, with Norris finishing sixth and teammate Oscar Piastri eighth, the first time either driver has been in the points this season.

But Norris said the whole drama could have been avoided.

"We have a soft [tyre] on that's 65 degrees [celsius], and I can't describe how little grip there is on track," he said, per racingnews365.com.

"It's not a bad temperature, but the tyre doesn't work and on this surface with this tyre temperature, I can't describe how bad the grip is.

"That's why you see everyone going straight on in turn one and locking up. It provides literally no grip, so you have to brake so early, which causes chaos and causes incidents."

The late-race restart at the Australian Grand Prix turns into chaos.

While some drivers found themselves in hot water, most notably Ferrari's Carlos Sainz, who was penalised five seconds for hitting Fernando Alonso, Norris suggested a change to the Pirelli rubber would make a big difference.

"If the tyres felt like they gave us some grip, I think you'd be able to see a good race without chaos and some clumsiness and things like that. It's just difficult," he explained.

"I wouldn't say it's clumsy from everyone. It's just you're racing and there's no grip, as simple as that.

"We need a tyre that gives us some more grip, and actually a tyre that feels like it should be on a Formula 1 car at the top of motorsport and at the moment, it feels pretty terrible."
