According to reports from Germany, a bird flew into the engine, causing the fire which resulted in a loud bang just before the plane took off. Flames were seen billowing from the aircraft, before passengers were evacuated.

No injuries were reported. Australian Steph Catley plays for Arsenal and along with teammates spent the night at a hotel.

"Our aircraft developed a technical issue prior to take-off in Germany on Sunday evening," a statement from Arsenal read.

"As a result, we remained in Wolfsburg overnight on Sunday before flying back to England on Monday afternoon. We would like to thank the staff onboard the aircraft and on the ground at the airport for their assistance."

Arsenal fought back to snatch a 2-2 draw travelling after twice European champions VfL Wolfsburg let a two-goal lead slip.
