Coach's plea to NRL after Wighton's brutal hit

//

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart is hoping Jackson Hastings' reaction to a brutal hit from Jack Wighton will be a factor as the star five-eighth faces a nervous wait.

Wighton was sent to the bin by referee Gerard Sutton in the 48th minute of the Raiders' 10-point loss to the Knights after flattening Hastings after a kick.

While the Knights No.7 was shaken up initially, he was able to brush off the hit and run out the remainder of the contest.

"He (Hastings) got up pretty quick, so fortunately there was no problem there, which I think they take into account, and he was falling when Jack came in," Stuart said after the match.

"He (Wighton) was just trying to change the momentum of the play and get a bit of energy in a desperate period of play."

League great Andrew Johns said Wighton found himself in hot water after briefly losing focus off Hastings prior to the hit.

"He takes his eyes off the target," Johns said on Nine's NRL coverage.

"He's going to pressure Jackson Hastings and then at the last minute he takes his eyes off where he's hitting.

"So he's got no control of where the shot is going."

The hit on Hastings was one of two reports in the game for Wighton after he was also placed on report in the 21st minute for a dangerous tackle on Lachie Miller.

Stuart was less worried about how that incident would be scrutinised.

"It's a reaction and he just clipped him around the neck, so I'm not too worried about that one," he said.

Stuart's Raiders face a tough task in round five when they host the reigning premiers on Friday night, while the Knights will face the Sea Eagles in Mudgee.
