Former Olympian's 'nasty' skin disease battle

//

Former British Olympian Lawrence Okoye has posted to TikTok a 'nasty' video of his battle with a potentially deadly skin condition.

The video showed Okoye, who competed in the London Games in 2012 in the discus, pressing into his leg, which left visible depressions in his shin that did not immediately rebound back.

In a subsequent video, he revealed he had been diagnosed with cellulitis, which he said developed after he "smashed up" his leg in the weeks prior.

According to Health Direct, a Federally-funded health website, cellulitis is a "bacterial infection of the skin, which can become serious if not treated quickly with antibiotics".

Former British Olympian Lawrence Okoye posted this video of a 'nasty' skin condition.

It also most commonly affects the lower leg - as it did with Okoye.

In worst cases, bacteria from the infection can spread into the blood stream and create sepsis, which can be fatal.

"A ton of people were trying to tell me I had heart disease or liver disease, kidney disease, cancer and diabetes but obviously that's not the case," he said in his next video.

"Those crazy holes that were in my leg no longer exist."

Okoye finished 12th and last in the discus event in London, with a best throw of 61.03m - more than 7m shy of German Robert Harting's gold-winning effort of 68.27m.

After the London Games, he had a crack at the NFL and signed several practice contracts but never played a game.
