Great's huge call on young gun shaking US Open

//

Carlos Alcaraz is the best 19-year-old Wally Masur has ever seen.

Speaking on Grand Slam Daily, Masur said Alcaraz's game is the most complete of any of the recent greats at such a young age.

"Pete Sampras had holes in his game at 19 - he was a serve, and a tremendous forehand player," he said.

"But this guy … you look at Rafa Nadal, he was winning slams at 18 but he's evolved over the years. This guy can do it all at 19."

Like the 'big three', Masur said Alcaraz had time on his side.

Carlos Alcaraz of Spain returns a shot to Frances Tiafoe of the United States.

"He's only going to get better. The belief is just going to grow, he's a big match player, and he can do it on any surface," Masur said.

"The tenacity he possesses, the resilience, the perspective that he possesses, it's unbelievable.

"Nadal's forehand was a shot that will never be repeated. The Sampras serve, a shot that will never be repeated. They had these standout abilities, and then they evolved over the course of the next decade to be brilliant.

"We knew (Alcaraz) was good, but wow, he's exceeded my expectations how quickly he's improving."

Masur said the way he bounced back after missing a match point opportunity in the fourth set in his US Open semi final against Frances Tiafoe also impressed him greatly.

"You know he had a match point in this match about an hour and a half before he closed it out … he just gets on with it with the best attitude possible," Masur said.

"Endurance is key. This 19 year old's got endurance - he's played three five setters in a row now, finishing one at three in the morning, getting home, going to bed at six, comes back and does it all again.

"I think he's been created by artificial intelligence."
