Cover-ups exposed as Knights trainer silenced

//

Knights trainer Hayden Knowles copped plenty of flak when he dared to make comments on the troubled culture within the club recently, earning the ire of those at the Knights with their heads still in the sand.

But in the short time since then, two players were caught doing 'something' in a toilet cubicle and two more were dropped for breaking club discipline… and the Knights have kept on losing.

Knowles isn't saying any more - but those who were quick to condemn him have suddenly gone very quiet.

The club is try to put a positive spin on its much-discussed culture - and I'm hearing plenty more incidents have been covered up.

With the way the Knights have been under-performing, and the rift between coach and players, there's no doubt there are many real problems within the camp and the loyal fans are the losers.

LOANED STAR'S WISH JUST A PIPE DREAM

David Nofoaluma can forget about remaining with the Melbourne Storm and abandoning the Wests Tigers.

Nofoaluma was struggling in reserve grade at the Tigers when he was loaned to the Storm late-season, where he is enjoying the fruits of playing outside the likes of Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster.

He has made none-too-subtle hints in recent weeks that he wants to stay at the Storm in 2023, saying how he is loving football again and thriving in purple.

But Tigers boss Tim Sheens, who loaned Nofoaluma to his good mate Craig Bellamy on the strict condition that it would only be for the remainder of this year to ease the Tigers' salary cap pressure, has shut down talk of a permanent deal.

"David has two years left on his contract with us - end of story," Sheens told Wide World of Sports.

KNIGHTS SECURE TEEN KIWI STAR

A bit of good news for the poor old Knights - and couldn't they use some now!

Boom Kiwi 18-year-old lock Tamakaimoana Whareaorere has put pen to paper with Newcastle until the end of 2024.

Ironically, the Knights were one of eight NRL clubs chasing Whareaorere when he was just 15 three years ago.

He opted to stay in New Zealand then, signing with the Warriors and learning his trade through their junior development system.

A former New Zealand Māori junior representative, he decided to make the move across the ditch for next season when the Knights came calling again recently.

"He's a tough kid and it's a great opportunity for him," the youngster's manager Dixon McIver told Wide World of Sports.

REMARKABLE FEAT NOT MATCHED BY GREATS

Trent Robinson is well aware that the premiership isn't won in July.

His Roosters were struggling mid-season and at one stage were in danger of missing out on the big end-of-season games.

But Robinson didn't panic, rode through another year of shocking injury tolls, and is coming home strongly in the final straight.

It continues a remarkable run by Robinson in his 10 seasons at the Roosters at the business end of the season.

Robinson will now finish with six or more wins from the last eight regular seasons fixtures for the ninth time in his 10 seasons at the club.

That's a record Craig Bellamy, Wayne Bennett and just about any other coach in the game's history couldn't match - and little wonder that the Roosters always seem to be up there when the whips are cracking.
