O'Sullivan's form in the opening three games for Penrith in the absence of star halfback Nathan Cleary was enough to convince the Dolphins that he can do the job next season.
The club is believed to have signed O'Sullivan to a two-year deal - and hope to lure Melbourne superstar Cameron Munster to partner him in the halves. But the decision was an awkward one for the club given that Sean's father Peter is the new club's recruitment manager.

But O'Sullivan senior stayed out of all talks with the 23-year-old, with coach Wayne Bennett and chief executive Terry Reader handling the negotiations.
The contract is a show of confidence in O'Sullivan, who has been a journeyman for much of his five-year career in the NRL. O'Sullivan has played for four clubs in that time - the Roosters, Broncos, Warriors and Panthers - and had just 24 games.
But the nuggety halfback played the best football of his career in his brief stint with the Panthers and that was enough to secure him a deal with the new club.
