Play was stopped during the Magpies' clash with the Crows at the MCG after the fire alarm sounded during the early stages of the second quarter.
Just 30 seconds into the second term, players from both sides were forced to gather in the middle of the oval, while fans were ushered out of the stadium.
Following five minutes of evacuation efforts, it was confirmed by the MCG that fans could return to their seats.
While the MCG announced that it was a "false alarm" at first, it was then revealed that a small fire had emerged in the Ponsford Stand before the situation was quickly defused.
"There was a small fire in a food outlet in the Ponsford Stand," Fox Footy's Sarah Jones explained revealed.
"The Melbourne fire brigade was in attendance, it was under control pretty quickly.
"So not a false alarm as such but not a big drama."
