As speculation mounts over whether Cameron Smith will play on next year, the Storm legend may have already shown his hand.
According to News Corp, Smith has purchased a Gold Coast house, and "picked up a new car" after the Melbourne Storm relocated to the Sunshine Coast to continue playing the 2020 NRL season as COVID-19 rocked Victoria.
Smith's children are reportedly enrolled in schools on the Gold Coast where his family is living.
It is the biggest hint yet that the 37-year-old may be on the verge of retiring or even preparing for a blockbuster move to the Gold Coast Titans as the Storm hooker's next move at the end of his 2020 contract, remains unknown.
Smith has been keeping media and fans guessing this season with even the man himself appearing undecided on what 2021 holds. His impressive form on the footy field has not indicated he is incapable of playing on and as the Titans have recruited heavily ahead of next season, Smith presents an attractive addition to steer the rebuild.
The property purchase by Smith comes as earlier this week Tigers hooker Harry Grant - who is on loan for one year from the Storm - told 300 guests at the Wests' annual awards night that if the Melbourne veteran plays on in 2021, Grant won't be going back to the Victorian NRL club.
Grant is contracted with the Storm but was loaned as Melbourne boast the dynamic hooker duo of Brandon and Cameron Smith.
With Grant impressing at the Tigers and winning the club's Rookie of the Year award though, it is understood the young gun has a get-out clause in his deal if Smith decides to play on for the Storm.
Last month Grant said he was unsure what Smith's decision will be.
"I've chatted to him a little bit but I haven't really chatted to him about what he's doing for the future," Grant said.
"Moreso how he's travelling up the Sunny Coast and if he's got anything for my game.
"I think he's done enough for the game and the club that he gets to make the decision.
"I'll probably retire before he does. I'm not sure, we'll see how we go.
"To be honest, I can't really imagine the game without Cam in it next year. In that sense, I do hope he does play on.
"I'm in a pretty good position where at the moment I've got a contract next year and going forward, I'm going to be in an NRL system.
"I've always got that contract down in Melbourne for another few years. I look of the positive side of things and go off that."
