Newcastle Knights playmaker Mitchell Pearce locked horns with his South Sydney counterpart Cody Walker early in the Rabbitohs 46-20 qualifying finals win on Sunday afternoon.
The moment came as the Knights stunned the Sydneysiders to grab the early ascendency when they nabbed a two-try lead within the opening 10-minutes.
Caught in back-play, Walker and Pearce appeared to share a few words before coming together in a heated scuffle before both teams rushed into the fray.
Amid the chaos Knights prop David Klemmer appeared to appeal referee Ben Cummins over a potential headbutt by Walker on Pearce.
"You see the headbutt? There was a headbutt, sir!" Klemmer was heard saying over Cummins' on-field mic.
No official complaint was recorded with Cummins not convinced over the appeal. That didn't stop Walker and Pearce from continuing their private battle.
"You'll do it when I'm not looking," Pearce yelled to Walker.
NRL guru Phil Gould was less than convinced by the display.
"I haven't seen a headbutt," Gould said in commentary for Nine. "I saw an invitation to heabutt, but I didn't see a headbutt.
"Mitchell Pearce put out the invitation and Cody Walker did not respond. He did a pretty good job not to. Mitch was saying, 'go on, I dare you'."
