Warriors battle to replace Johnson

//

Former schoolboy sensation Hayze Perham has thrown himself into the mix to replace Shaun Johnson at halfback after helping the Warriors snatch a 12-6 win over Melbourne Storm in Geelong last night.

All summer, the race to replace Johnson was thought to be a battle in two between Penrith signing Adam Keighran and Kiwi youngster Chanel Harris-Tavita.

Both were fair in last night’s scrappy trial, but it was 18-year-old Perham who set the game alight.

It'll be weird to play against the Warriors: Johnson

Fresh out of school, he came on in the second half and with eight minutes to go, stepped through the Storm defence for a solo try that proved the match-winner.

Perham looked good in his debut for the Warriors in a trial midweek in Rotorua, also against the Storm, playing at fullback.

The other standout for the Warriors was former Dragon Sam Cook, who played strongly at hooker.

With Issac Luke rumoured to be in talks with Parramatta, Cook’s strong performance could not have been better timed.
